Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is a unique institution of higher learning in India. It was established in 1920, evolving from the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental (MAO) which was founded by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in 1877.

The University has always welcomed students from all communities and corners of the world since its inception. It offers over 300 courses in both traditional and modern branches of education and draws students from all over India and various countries, including Africa, West Asia, and Southeast Asia.

Seats are reserved for students from SAARC and Commonwealth countries in some courses. The University is open to all, irrespective of caste, creed, religion, or gender.

The Aligarh Muslim University is spread over 467.6 hectares in the city of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. It ranks 8th among the top 20 research universities in India and has more than 37,327 students, 1,686 teachers, and 5,610 non-teaching staff on its rolls.

The University has 13 faculties, 117 teaching departments, 3 academies, and 21 centers and institutes. Most of the staff and students reside on the campus, as the University has a residential character. There are 19 halls of residence for students with 80 hostels.

In spite of the establishment of numerous universities and institutions of higher learning all over the country, Aligarh Muslim University has managed to maintain its national and international character as an institution of excellence.
