The Common Law Admission Test abbreviated as CLAT is an all India national admission test conducted by the Indian schools and universities to offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs for aspiring candidates. The LLB and LLM examinations are periodically conducted by franchises that rank next in seniority.
Currently, 21 National Law Universities in India avail the admission test. Besides, around 45 other institutes are also qualified to use the CLAT scores for selecting their potential candidates.
Candidates are eligible for CLAT after passing their higher secondary education. Both Bachelor of Law (LLB) and Master of Law (LLM) are integrated programs offered by the National Law Universities.
Prior to a single integrated examination system, candidates had to sit separately for the admission tests conducted by the then autonomous law institutes.
Thus, the independent examination patterns caused inconvenience among the students who were compelled to apply for numerous institutes instead.
Moreover, earlier law entrance examination dates clashed with those of bigger national tests like All India Pre Medical Test and Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination.
This conflict of dates required students to compromise their education choices.

must directly contact the respective university and learn about their foreign student programs.
For the undergraduates (LLB)
To appear for the undergraduate CLAT one must pass the Senior Secondary School examination or its equivalent with a pass mark of at least 45%.
For SC and ST candidates, the relaxation is extended to an additional 5% (40%). CLAT does not maintain an upper age-limit restriction; therefore, candidates may choose to sit for the examination in any year of their lives.
However, the Indian law universities may have their respective age-restrictions, which CLAT does not take part in.
For the postgraduates (LLM)
To appear for the postgraduate CLAT, one must pass with an equivalent Bachelor degree from a recognised university. One must hold at least 55% aggregate in their passing marks (a 5% relaxation for SC and ST candidates) and those who cleared the supplementary examination are eligible for the entrance provided that they score 55% in the aggregate and produce the required documents at the respective universities during the date of admission.
LLB Examination pattern
CLAT lasts for a total of 2 hours, which includes 200 multiple-choice questions. The question paper is segregated into different subject-based sections.
so that students would have to answer topics from General Knowledge and Current Affairs (50), Legal Aptitude (40), Logical Reasoning (50), English language (40) and Elementary Mathematics (20).
CLAT harbours a negative-marking scheme; hence, for every wrongly attempted answer, one shall witness a deduction 0.25 marks whereas every right answer carries one mark.
Previously, CLAT required aspiring candidates to fill in their preferred universities in their application forms. Based on ranks scored in the examination, the students were allocated universities of their preference. However, since CLAT 2011, the system of prior choosing was expelled, and now candidates are required to make a list of their preferred universities after the announcement of the results.
